ACT scores posted by last year’s juniors in Hopkins County Schools are up in all four content areas. Scores are above the state average in two of the four content areas and the composite.
In addition, the percent of students meeting college readiness benchmarks was at or above the state aver-age in three of the four content areas, as well as those who met all four benchmarks. These percentages increased in every area.
“We are certainly pleased by these results,” said Superintendent Linda Zellich. “They reflect the dedi-cated efforts put forth by our students and teachers. We’re encouraged by the increase in students meet-ing college readiness benchmarks, because it indicates more students will be College and Career Ready by graduation. While we’re excited about these gains, we must keep working hard because the goal is to show continued progress.”
Last year’s juniors took the ACT on March 4 as part of the state accountability system.
Madisonville North Hopkins High School demonstrated gains across-the-board, with both scores and the percent meeting college readiness benchmarks being above the state average. The school’s composite score is 19.8. These are the highest scores MNHHS has posted in the six years ACT has been part of the state accountability system.
“Congratulations to the teachers and students for their hard work,” said Assistant Superintendent DeDe Ashby, former MNHHS principal. “It paid off and was reflected in their performance. The bar has been raised for our students, and we want to see continued success.”
Hopkins County Central High School continues its trend of improved scores. The school raised its scores in English and reading. Scores in math and science are slightly lower, but are still the second highest recorded by the school in the past six years. The composite score remained the same, at 18.8. HCCHS also recorded a higher percentage of students meeting college readiness benchmarks in English and reading.
“Even though the scores stayed the same and didn’t move up from last year, I am truly pleased with the tremendous growth this year’s seniors had from PLAN to ACT,” said Principal Tommy Burrough. “When we compared scores from last year at the same time, we already have 30 more stu-dents College Ready. That is progress, and we are continuing to help students improve and become College and Career Ready.”
