A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet expects to continue northbound lane restrictions on the US 41 Twin Bridges between Henderson and Evansville through Friday, August 17, 2012.
All traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone starting at about 8:00 a.m., CDT, daily. The work zone is expected to remain in place until about 3:00 p.m., each day.
Northbound motorists should be prepared to merge starting at about the Audubon Park Entrance and be fully moved to the left-hand lane by the time they reach the end of the bridge.
Motorists can do their part to reduce traffic snarls by practicing patience and courtesy as they enter this work zone.
The northbound lane restriction is to allow a detailed inspection of the northbound bridge structure. Engineers will be using a Snooper Truck to access the deck substructure on the bridge. To speed the inspection process, a climb team will be inspecting the bridge truss.
We will attempt to provide timely updates as this inspection work progresses
As soon as inspection work is completed on the northbound bridge, the inspection team plans to move to the southbound bridge. Southbound traffic restrictions are tentatively scheduled for the week of August 20th through the 24th.
All bridges get a formal detailed inspection every two years. Long-span bridges that cross lakes and major rivers in Kentucky get an additional annual safety inspection.
The US 41 Twin Bridges, also known as the Bi-State Viet Nam Gold Star Memorial Bridges, are located at US 41 mile point 19.649 about a mile south of the Kentucky-Indiana State Line. They carry approximately 37,000 vehicles per day across the Ohio River between Henderson, KY, and Evansville, IN.
The bridges are located about a mile downstream from the confluence of the Green River and the Ohio River at Ohio River navigation mile point 786.8.
The northbound bridge was opened to traffic on July 4, 1932. The southbound bridge was opened to traffic in December 1966.
