Ground has been broken on what’s been called a needed widening project in Union County.
A four-mile stretch of Highway 56, also known as the Morganfield-Shawneetown Road, will see be rebuilt and aligned, which includes widening two, 12-foot lanes with paved 10-foot shoulders.
The current configuration of the road does not allow large trucks to travel through the section. Once completed, truckers will shave nearly thirteen miles off a one-way trip.
Also announced Tuesday was 200 thousand dollars for several projects to improve energy efficiency at public buildings throughout the community.
